Creating a Simple Self-care Routine

Self-care is something we all need to do, but we all struggle actually doing it! Sure we’ll practice some mindfulness for a week and then quit or we start journaling and two weeks later we don’t even know where that journal is at! We’ll start a skin care routine and then sleep with our make-up on the very next night! Ladies, get it together!

I’m all about The Slight Edge right now and what it comes down to is doing these simple, positive, mundane tasks every day to make your life better. Notice the word positive. Self-care is supposed to make your entire life better and sometimes that means the tough stuff.

So put your phone down, stop thinking about your ex, and let’s get started.

Stop Working

Girl, take a chill pill. It’s after 5 pm and that means the laptops close, phones are down, and you are finally focusing on yourself. Take this time to quit the day and breathe. Sit for a moment and stop thinking about meetings, appointments, deadlines, and dues.

Nice, isn’t it?

Tube & Tunes

This is not an opportunity for you to binge watch Gossip Girl. This is the time for you to let yourself delve into another realm. Take a moment to relax knowing you don’t have to kill a demogorgon or take the iron throne – someone else does.

While I love GoT, I also like documentaries. These can be educational, informative, and entertaining. Some of my favorites are Blackfish (save the whales, y’all) and The Nineties.

Music can also be relaxing. Just taking the time to sit and listen to something other the clicking of a keyboard or clients can help ease the mind.

About once or twice a week, indulge yourself in a snack. I’m not talking a cliff bar or a bag of Cheetos. I’m talking a snack. Okay, calm down.

Get yourself some of those fancy ice creams or coffees and when you’re really wanting to relax, have one! These are chocked full of sugar, calories, and sweet, sweet self-care.

My personal snack? Blue Bell vanilla ice cream and Braum’s hot fudge. IT’S SO GOOD, but I can’t have it all the time otherwise I’d be the size of a Braum’s. However, when I do have this snack I really soak it in. It’s delicious and it makes me happy.

Treat Yo Self

Spending a little on yourself is OK! Sometimes it’s nice to reward all your hard work and efforts with a little something that you’ve picked out. I recently bought the CUTEST pair of white boots from Forever21 that I can’t wait to share with y’all. Why did I get them? Because I wanted them. They make me feel good. They make me feel tall(er). They make me feel like I am the baddest bitch on this planet – because I am! And you are too! Girl power!

So go ahead and get that new jacket, purse, planner, or coffee mug. Rewarding yourself with treats will only encourage you to work harder.

Skin Care

An obvious self-care element, but it needs to be done. Find some products that you really love and it will make you use them! Find products that smell good, rejuvenate your skin, and make you feel good.

I use Neutrogena Makeup Remover Night Calming Cleansing Towelettes to take my make-up off, wash off with warm water, then use Clean & Clear Essentials Dual Action Facial Moisturizer. Every night! That’s it! My face is clear from blemishes and it takes all of 7 minutes to do.

Practicing good skin care will benefit you so much in the long run – and I’m not just talking to the ladies! Men, take care of your skin, I promise it’s worth it.

I LOVE practicing some mindfulness. It took me a minute to master, but I had to figure out what worked for me.

Mindfulness isn’t a full session of meditation, it’s just taking a moment to be fully present in and aware of what you’re doing. Soaking in the moment and mentally taking notes of the sights, smells, and feelings of that moment.

I like to practice mindfulness in traffic. It’s a hectic time for most people and I used to be a very angry driver, until I started mindfulness. I took one of the most stressful times of my day and I taught myself to relax.

I turn off all music, sometimes roll the windows down, and just soak it in. The sounds of engines, horns, and the gentle hum of my own vehicle. I don’t need to be in a hurry, but the world says I do. 5’o’clock rush isn’t a rush anymore, but a time for me to just simply be present in the world around me.

Grab a book

I love reading. I have a fat stack of books next to my bed just in case I need to flip through a few pages before bed or during my free time. As you all know, I’m reading The Slight Edge right now, but I’m also reading It’s Called a Break-up Because it’s Broken.

Find something that you like to read, not just what other bloggers or I recommend! While they might be good books, they might not send into a total state of relaxation! So go ahead, grab your copy of Twilight and enjoy there’s no judging at A Marley Party.

Clean up

Living or working in a clean space can improve your productivity by 900%! I am a firm believer in that statistic I just made up.

But seriously, don’t you feel better when things around you are where they’re supposed to be? Clutter in your space means clutter in your brain and that just isn’t the way to success, girl!

So take some advice from Marie Kondo and get to cleaning up your space which in turn will clean up your life. Spark that joy, girl.

There are so many other steps you can take to self-care, but it’s all about what works for you. These are things that help me, but they might not work for you and that’s okay! As long as you do it, I think that’s a great first step.
