Spreading Love on Valentine’s Day

“If you only have one smile, give it to the people you love.” – Maya Angelou

I love Valentine’s Day. It’s my favorite holiday and the sweet, sweet days between January 2nd and February 15th are when I thrive. Everything is pink, heart shaped, and love is everywhere! The Target dollar section in popping and there is literally candy everywhere – what is not to love!?

However, I understand that not everyone feels the same way I do. There are people in this world that have been so scorned by love that the whole concept of Valentine’s Day is torturous. I’m here to help you, friend.

Here are some things to do on Valentine’s Day whether you spend it alone or not.

Take your family out

There’s this weird misconception of Valentine’s Day where people think you have to have a ~love interest~ as your valentine – this isn’t true!

Even if you’re a big bad adult, you can still take your parents out or do something special for them on Valentine’s Day. This day is all about love and who loves you more than the ones who raised you (this doesn’t always have to be a mom & dad either).

Buy your mom some chocolates, give your dad some flowers, call your grandma and talk for an hour, tell your best friends mom that you’re thinking of her.

Don’t forget about these special people in your life.

Stop being a baby

The only person allowed to be baby on Valentine’s Day are 1. actual infants 2. puppies and 3. St. Valentine.

There are thousands of people on this Earth that would kill for another Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, so enjoy the day of ~love~ by celebrating those you cherish! Make an effort to tell people you love them and that you’re grateful for them.

This holiday isn’t just about fancy dates, heart-shaped chocolate boxes, and roses. It’s a day to celebrate your love for one another!

Find some friends

If you’re lonely I guarantee someone else is too. Go to your favorite spot and sit at the community table or reach out to someone at your local coffee spot! I hate to break this to you, but you’re not the only one who is single on Valentine’s Day, so put on your big girl panties and go make a friend.

Spend your day of love with those in need. There are plenty of elderly, sick children, and lonely pets who would love to feel a little affection on this day. Not only will this fill your heart up more than any slice of cheesecake would, but it will fill theirs also.

Be your own Valentine

Take yourself on a date.

Go get a blow out, a manicure, buy that sexy dress, and go on a date with the person you should love most in this world – yourself.

Don’t spend your day loathing over lost loves, missed connections, and that girl who is now dating your college crush. Like Lizzo says, “I’m my own soulmate!”

On February 14th, Valentine’s Day, the day of love – take time to celebrate that in your own way! This is a day to revel in the fact that your an independent bad bitch or you’re madly in love with someone you found to spend your life with – either way, celebrate it!
